The drug is extracted from the root of Panax notoginseng (also known as Aralia quinquefolia var. notoginseng), which belongs to the same family or Panax ginseng Chinese. The plant is native to the southern regions of China, and the root is harvested before the flowers of the plant or after the fruit has matured.
Chemical Constituents
The active components of the root seems to be saponins. The root of the plant also heteroglycans compounds containing glucose, galactose, arabinose, and Mann, and xylose.
Actions
The extract of the roots of P. notoginseng has shown antitumor activity in mouse skin tumors. Studies have also shown some calcium channel antagonism leads to antihypertensive and vasodilator actions. One study found that the notoginseng using dogs had similar electrophysiological effects of amiodarone on. An in vitro study found that notoginseng extract improved sperm motility too. Notoginseng has also demonstrated improved learning and reduced memory deficits in rats.
Reported Uses
Notoginseng root is used traditionally in Chinese medicine to treat internal and external bleeding. It is taken internally to quell the nosebleeds and blood in stool, urine and lungs and to the acute attacks of Crohn's disease. It is applied externally, is used to relieve pain and swelling of bruises, cuts, sprains, and other external wounds. None of these treatments has been supported by controlled clinical trials in humans.
Notoginseng has been promoted to treat angina and hypertension based on animal studies showing effects on circulation and blood pressure. The lack of controlled human trials notoginseng root limits its therapeutic usefulness.
