How safe are tanning beds anyway? According to a recent report by the World Health Organization - tanning beds are not very secure at all. In this report, lamps and tanning booths have been reclassified from "likely" carcinogen "carcinogenic to humans, because its ultraviolet (UV). This puts the ultraviolet radiation in the category along side of cancer-causing products such as arsenic, and asbestos snuff!

Excessive exposure to UVA radiation has many risks, including wrinkles, spots, premature aging, loss of elasticity of the skin and cancer skin. The scientific evidence reports that sun exposure is the main cause of three main types of skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma, the basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer can spread to other organs if not treated.

The use of tanning beds without proper eye protection can be harmful to the eyes and cause a painful condition called arc eye. Eye of bow should be from excessive exposure to sun, or light reflected from snow, sand or water. The intense UV light absorbed by the eye may cause superficial keratitis and painful. These symptoms usually occur several hours after exposure and resolve within a few days. Excessive UV radiation may result in corneal burn that will not heal by itself.

Sunless tanning is a much safer alternative tanning in the sun or tanning booths. This tanning airbrush or spray contains a chemical that temporarily obscures the skin, making it appear tan. Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, is the chemical used in spray tanning solutions. DHA is safe and approved for external use for body to the skin coloring. Sunless tanning lotions that contain DHA are also available.

Experts found that all types of radiation UV causes genetic mutations in laboratory animals, demonstrating that UV radiation is carcinogenic. Because of the many adverse effects of overexposure UV radiation on human health, the World Health Organization recommends that UV tanning devices for cosmetic reasons.
