If Health food supplements really effective?
Apparently, natural food supplements are vogue these days and are easily available over the counter. Many are openly advertised to mitigate, treat or even sometimes cure a specific disease or debilitating condition. Some even promise to "help heal" a long list of diseases or nutritional deficiencies commonly suffered by many people.
Labelling of Food Health Supplements
But are most effective? Health food supplements, be labeled as such, should contribute to the food needs of the person, in minerals, vitamins, fatty acids or amino acids. As such, they fall in the U.S. as food but in other countries that may be considered drugs. The difference lies in the laws of specific countries, and not the article itself.
They also have to comply with any or a combination of the following functions:
1. Correct a nutritional deficiency "normal"
2. Enhance the nutritional content of a foodstuff
3. Supplement a regular diet.
The former refers to food supplements that are taken directly in the form of tablets, capsules or tea to provide nutrition is not otherwise available due to allergies, intolerance or similar reasons. Such supplements are ingested healthy foods rather than drugs, and in such cases function as medicine.
In the second, the health food supplement is added to food, which is as 'rich' for the item. Not often seen in infant formulas (fortified with iron, etc.), the elderly or pregnant women (fortified with calcium), and common salt, ubiquitous iodine and fluoride toothpaste.
The latter is probably the most common and recognized. As multivitamin supplements and articles like ordinary foods that contain health, these health food supplements can also be derived from sources such as mushrooms colorful, fruit parts of the tree and leaves. Often contribute minerals or other substances that act directly on the body's metabolism and anti-oxidants, or help the body's organs perform their function better.
Weighing the pros and cons of Health Food Supplements
But do they work? Many, such as niacin in bread, vitamin D in margarine and other foods, calcium, iron and other minerals in beverages and many other examples that we take for granted. However, there are others, especially those Newer whimsical concoctions, which has shown that nothing or very little nutritional value, but is touted as beneficial to the body.
Sometimes, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The flavonoids, for example, found in many plant foods, have been proclaimed by a soy sauce company as beneficial to health. However, studies have shown that in terms of volume, salt intake could be ten times higher than before the effect of flavonoids flavonoids' feel. In summary, can not die of cancer, but surely succumb to cirrhosis of the liver due to the amount of salt ingested.
Therefore, supplements are healthy foods really effective? They are, most of the time, but the indiscriminate use is not recommended.
