Licorice Flavonoid
The fight against cancer spicy herbal compound, apigenin
The news that someone close to us or anyone particularly famous has been diagnosed with malignant disease, can lead to pause for reflection. When this happens often stop to think that when it comes to cancer, the odds are more or less against us and that's just a matter of time before we face that "suspicious" lump sum or a sinister shadow on X-ray plate.
These thoughts are not really surprising considering the large number of different cancers that have the potential to invade our bodies - the common cancers, including breast, prostate, colon, lung and cancer rates is not as common as leukemia and thyroid cancer.
If we are wise we will make an effort to reduce our risk of cancer by eating sensibly, not smoking, reduce our consumption of alcohol and exercising regularly. What also should be doing, according to a growing body of research is to eat more foods that contain a natural compound apigenin.
SOURCES Apigenin
Apigenin is a flavonoid antioxidant found in herbs, spices and other food plants. Examples of foods containing apigenin are herbs and spices, coriander, licorice, oregano, parsley, oregano, rosemary and tarragon. Other foods such as a citrus, tea, celery and wheat also contain significant quantities of yellow cancer fighting compound.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Although most research this compound has been limited to the laboratory, scientists have found that apigenin study presents several different mechanisms all work to address the complex factors underlying the growth of cancer cells.
As well as interfering with a number of cancer signaling processes, apigenin also inhibits the growth of new blood vessels that cancer cells need to grow and proliferate.
HER2-positive breast cancer gene
As breast cancer is concerned, but also inhibits the expression of the HER2/neu gene. Women who have HER2/neu are more susceptible to an aggressive, tough form of cancer treatment for which, until recently, there was no effective treatment.
Apigenin has been shown to suppress the activity of this gene and in this respect, joins fellow green tea flavonoids based on the epigallocatechin gallate, a potent preventive agent in those unfortunate enough to inherit the HER2/neu gene.
Apigenin-sensitive cancer
To date, apigenin was found to inhibit cancer cell lines after breast, prostate, lung, leukemia, colon, ovary, skin, and thyroid - malignant diseases that account for the vast majority of cancers that most of us fear to fall.
More safe than sorry
It will be a while before the research is conducted on the use of apigenin in the treatment of these neoplasms.
And in a cautionary note, there is also some evidence that high doses of apigenin may actually interfere with one or two chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of leukemia.
In other words, a higher dose of a phytonutrient useful against cancer is not always better than lower doses than are effective in preventing the onset of the disease.
EAT MORE SPICES
Instead of waiting for that to happen we must be more proactive and eating that contain this important phytonutrients.
A regular consumption of herbs and spices like cilantro (coriander), licorice, marjoram, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme (as well as other foods such as whole wheat, celery, tea and citrus) should provide protection quantities of apigenin.
Moreover, these and other spices supply many other compounds that have demonstrated their ability to inhibit cancer.

Nutrigenomics, also called "nutritional genetics," a phrase coined in 1999, is the study of the molecular relationship between nutrients and gene expression and how genetic variations can cause people to respond differently to food nutrients. Scientists discovered that licorice flavonoid oil (LFO) standardized for polyphenols (30%) with glabridin (3%), influences the expression of the genes that increase fatty acid break down and decrease fatty acid synthesis, thus helping to maintain healthy body fat composition. * In an era when ancient Egypt ruled, licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) was among the first botanicals that were reverently used for the production of medicinally valued tinctures, teas and salves. Its use spread and was detailed in Chinese, Greek, Indian and Roman history. Historically, licorice has used in many Chinese herbal preparations as a guide to enhance the activity of other ingredients, reduce toxicity, and improve flavor. * Features
